The Fox Theatre has begun an exciting program to contribute a portion of ticket sales to charitable organizations both close to home in Boulder and around the world. $0.25 from each concert ticket purchased (at Albums on the Hill, on-line at Fox Ticketing or by phone) will be set aside in a special fund and donated to different organizations.

With our patrons' help, The Fox Theatre hopes to make a tangible and positive difference in our local and world community.

Head Count

March 2008

Since its inception in 2004, HeadCount has registered over 50,000 voters, more than any all-volunteer group in the U.S. The organization was formed in early 2004 by a small group of musicians, band managers, concert promoters and fans, and quickly blossomed into a nationwide network. By April of that year the organization was registering voters at more than 20 concerts per week, and went on to send teams on the road with Dave Matthews Band, The Dead and Phish, on the way to registering 48, 500 voters. HeadCount also produced its own public service announcements starring those artists, which aired on CBS' "The Late Show with David Letterman" and TNT and TBS. This was all accomplished without the aid of a paid staff or central office. In 2006, HeadCount staged "The Midterms Matter Tour," bringing a voter registration theme to 35 major concert events. It also generated over one million e-mails directly from artists to their fans, reminding people to register and to vote. The upcoming election cycle will see HeadCount register 100,000 to 200,000 voters, targeting young concert goers at America's largest live music events. The activity will include fielding 50 or more regional voter registration teams while also sending street teams on the road with up to a dozen major acts. This will be supported by an aggressive multi-media strategy and artist-based communications that will profoundly touch millions of young people with the "vote" message. Meanwhile, thousands of young people will gain first-hand community organizing experience as volunteers, fulfilling another of HeadCount's core objectives - "training the activists of tomorrow."

Operation Lookout

February 2008

OPERATION LOOKOUT® is a Charter Member of AMECO Association of Missing & Exploited Children's Organizations. AMECO is an organization of member agencies in the U.S. and Canada dedicated to serve the cause of missing and exploited children, their families and the community at large. Our goal is to fulfill one of the more IMPORTANT missions in life--To protect the Innocents. When the urgent need is to find lost children and recover them, the first priority and ultimate objective at OPERATION LOOKOUT® is to bring about a positive reunion of the children with their loved ones. Missing, abducted or runaway kids, Jane or John Doe, unknown persons, forensic investigators, or victim-searching families, have a place to turn for hope, encouragement and experienced case managers at OPERATION LOOKOUT®. Few of us know the agony a missing child will experience when lost, alone and afraid. And, gratefully, most families will never experience the agony of having their child go missing. But, for the grief stricken families who do face this sad experience, OPERATION LOOKOUT® is dedicated and committed to the cause of aiding them throughout the search for their missing child, and in seeking out those whom society has callously abandoned as mere runaways or throwaways. The worst abandonment's take place out of the public eye, yet we must never abandon such a priceless heritage.

Boulder County Cares

December 2007

"The mission of Boulder County Cares is to help Boulder County's unsheltered homeless during life-threatening conditions by providing services and supplies, and making referrals to other community service providers." The Boulder County Cares program started in March 1997 to provide outreach assistance to unsheltered homeless persons in Boulder, Colorado. After the freezing death of a long-time homeless resident of Boulder, it was acknowledged that there was a need for a program to make contact and provide available assistance to those unwilling or unable to find shelter during life-threatening conditions. Boulder County Cares evolved from the efforts of seven collaborating agencies--the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, Addictions Recovery Center (ARC), Boulder County Health Department, City of Boulder Police, Boulder County Sheriff's Department, Boulder Community Hospital, and Salvation Army-to address the life-threatening needs of this at-risk population. Representatives of these agencies now constitute the program's Advisory Board, and meet regularly throughout the year to review and design the program as it evolves. Boulder County Cares recently ended its eighth season of operation and has filled a once gaping hole in the available services for our homeless citizens. Every night during the months of October through April, two volunteers comb the streets, alleys, underpasses, vacant lots, and other areas of the city seeking out homeless persons and providing life-saving assistance. Nightly, we offer blankets, soup, cold-weather clothing, ground covers, hats, gloves, socks, and other provisions to those we encounter and are willing to accept our assistance. Whenever requested or appropriate, we provide referrals and transportation for homeless persons to the ARC (Addiction Recovery Center/detox), Boulder Community Hospital, and Boulder Shelter for the Homeless. During the 2004-2005 season we made 2143 contacts with homeless men and women. As the program becomes a visible and consistent presence in our community, the need for our services continues to grow.

Sidman Fund

November 2007

On March 6, 1992 the Fox Theatre opened on a wing and a prayer. Our Partnership of Dicke Sidman, Dave MacKenzie, James Hambleton, Jon O'leary and Don Strasburg beat every odd simply by getting the doors open. There is no question Dicke Sidman, the elder statesman of the group and President, was the driving force. Besides Dicke, the other partners were all 23-24 years old; Dicke at 42 was a concert industry veteran. Dicke brought the wisdom, insight and relationships to the table. Dicke guided us through our formative years and without him there is absolutely no way the Fox could have survived.

Late in 1994 Dicke got sick and doctors could not ascertain the problem. Tragically in December we received devastating news, Dicke had terminal cancer. Dicke passed away on April 7th 1995. More devastating than our loss was Dicke left two young boys without a father and a widowed wife. Since Dicke passed away his boys and wife have managed the best they could. The Fox has done its best to be there to help out.

Unbelievably this past June tragedy again struck the Sidman family. Janet Cooper Sidman, Dicke's widow and the boy's mother, suffered a devastating massive stroke.

We are very happy to report that Janet is finally at home and fighting hard and recovering slowly - one day at a time. The donations raised are going to the boy's eduction.

Carriage House Homeless Community Center

October 2007

The Carriage House was established in 1996 when a need for daylight services for the homeless was identified by the local businesses and the faith community (Carriage House is a non-religious organization). A coalition of business owners, civil servants, faith community representatives and city staff collectively agreed to create a place where the homeless could come for shelter from the elements, a midday meal, and access to community resources. Carriage House offers answers to clients’ questions about where to go during daylight hours?, How to access other human services designed to assist the homeless?, And, how do I find a job or a place to live? Through its small staff and dedicated volunteers, Carriage House provides answers to the tough questions that face homeless men and women everyday: safety, stability and a new start. By offering assistance to those most in need of resources in our community, Carriage House attempts to improve the quality of life in Boulder. The Boulder Shelter for the Homeless must ask clients to leave at eight in the morning and return in the evening. Our clients are not always welcome on the Pearl St. Mall, the library or places of business, especially when they remain in those places far beyond the time required to conduct routine business. In addition, although there are other agencies that give food to clients, CH is unique in seizing upon the opportunity to provide food to offer other services, such as substance abuse groups, job assistance, and case management or advocacy.

Intercambio de Comunidades

September 2007

The mission of Intercambio de Comunidades is to build respectful communities and increase opportunities for immigrants through language education, cultural exchange and friendship. Lee Shainis graduated from Michigan in 1999 and drove across the country heading for Portland to find work in the nonprofit world. He made a pit stop in Boulder to visit friends and has yet to make it to Portland. Shawn Camden was a student at CU who had recently returned form Mexico with a passion for Spanish and the Latino culture. Their paths crossed one day at a fire pit in Lee's backyard in January 2000, and by October the idea and dream for Intercambio started becoming a reality. In their kitchen and basement they would discuss the segregation of their community, and about creating an organization that brought together immigrants and non-immigrants through volunteer-taught English classes. They both began teaching immigrant families at their homes and formed intercultural friendships with a focus on two-way learning. They learned about the struggles of the hidden immigrant population, the depression that exists due to feelings of isolation and hopelessness, much stemming from not knowing the language or culture. They talked with friends to see if they would be interested in teaching as well, and they began doing research in the community to see what kind of need existed for individualizes, flexible and friendly English classes. The response was that the need was overwhelming, not only for affordable English classes but for opportunities for communities that don't often have ongoing face-to-face interactions to come together and build respect through language learning. They took a huge leap in turning the idea into reality by finding and quickly being accepted by the Colorado Nonprofit Development Center (CNDC), a group in Denver that serves as an incubator for start-up nonprofits. In January 2001 Intercambio became an official 501(c)(3) organization.
