Canadian singer Kathleen Edwards released her debut album – FAILER – in 2002. Three years later, she found herself sitting on a Greyhound bus for a 13-hour trip from Canada to New York City for an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman the night before the release of BACK TO ME. After taking a few years off to purchase a Heintzman piano and learn how to play, work at a winery, practice the violin, garden relentlessly, start jogging, and playing a few random shows; Edwards was ready to return to the studio. ASKING FOR FLOWERS is an album that also had some goals attached: to play with some musicians Edwards had not yet worked with. To see through a sonic vision living in her head. To commit herself to being precise as well as open-minded. To have bare-bones folk songs, but also lush instrumental pieces. Most importantly, Edwards strove to write songs that tell a story, be it hers or someone else’s, with honesty and integrity. Hopefully, she won’t have to take the Greyhound to Letterman this time around.
